Creation Epiphany

I was walking with my children today at Notre Dame University. One of our favorite activities is to grab any of the stale bread in the house and bless the Irish ducks on campus with an assortment of carbs. Good fun! Today was our first day back after a longer than desired winter. As we walked through campus I was again mesmerized by the surrounding beauty that was beginning to bust wide open. Up here in the northern mid-west region of our great country, spring is so close you can smell and taste it and the hope that this reality brings almost erases the pain of being confined indoors this year nearly 7 months.

In fact, as we walked, Romans 8:18-27 came to mind. I was reminded that within my circumstances, there is always an immediate hope of restoration available to my soul. The reality is that it is always there, whether I choose to see it or not. What we were made for as spiritual image-bearers is available to us now if we allow the interactive presence of the Holy Spirit to tear us away from the suppression of bad weather. A new wind is blowing through and buds of various fruit are about to spring to life if we can begin to see with the eyes of the Kingdom of God. This time of year is a perfect picture of the regeneration process we are allowed to undergo as followers of Jesus.

There are times, as leaders, where we feel like we are overwhelmed with an unending series of unfortunate events and to bail out is a tempting option towards immediate gratification. James, the physical brother of Jesus, promises us that true character is rooted in perseverance and that not only should we endure the winter, we should learn to live as hopeful, Spring anticipating, life-loving leaders that point people to what is suppose to be and what we all were made to appreciate.

Are you that kind of leader?
